Ka Thabeng has a wide variety of plants; trees, shrubs and climbers some of which are said to have medicinal properties. Most of these plants are indigenous to Lesotho. Nearly twenty indigenous species of trees and shrubs were identified in the area (Table 1). This high concentration of different plant species in this place seem be influenced by two main factors. The area is on the South side of the plateau, which is often moist for most part of the year, and therefore allows vegetation to thrive. On the other hand, due to the “self-protecting” features of the place described earlier, the vegetation is not prone to anthropogenic disturbances common in many easily accessible places.

Among the most interesting of the plant species in the area are scolopiamundii and Halerialucida. Halerialucida has fascinated children with its prevalence in the area and its ability to provide juicy sweet fruits in the months of December and January. scolopiamundii, while not as prevalent, is present in significant quantities and fascinates the locals with its uniquely tasting berries in the months of May and June, the winter months in Lesotho when many other fruits are scarce. It is amazing that these species are not presently cultivated in Lesotho. However, some scientists at the National University of Lesotho are examining the nutritional value of the fruits of scolopiamundii from the area to determine its potential application in drinks and the possibility of large scale cultivation of the plant.

It is worth noting that for some non-native plant species, mainly Populusnigra (papoliri) and Acacia dealbata (boleikatlele) have been introduced to the area. These species were deliberately cultivated by some families in the village as a source of family firewood.
